All,
I stopped by Lake Brittle in Fauquier County this morning about 10:30.
Among the 10 or so Ring-billed Gulls was an adult Lesser Black-backed
Gull. I have seen a Lesser Black-backed Gull on this lake every winter
for 5 or 6 years now. I'm assuming it's the same one. There were about
1000 geese but nothing other than Canadas and one mutt that initially
caught my attention because it had orange legs. Just a mutt goose
though. Ducks included Mallard, Greater and Lesser Scaup, Green-winged
Teal, Northern Pintail, Bufflehead, and Hooded Merganser. All the small
lakes in the area were frozen over thus the conentration at Brittle
which still has some open water. I dikdn't see any Common Mergansers so
I'm assuming they have all retreated to Lake Manassas.
Best birding to all
