Leaving from work at the North Anna Power Station on Lake Anna this afternoon,
I witnessed what I can only describe as a waterfowl extravaganza.  In all there
were over 1200 birds on the lake off of the power station.  Most exciting was a
single Red-necked Grebe along with 20 Pied-billed and 26 Horned Grebe.  Loons
were well represented too with 45 Common and 2 Red-throateds.  Ducks seen were
as follows: 700 L. Scaup, 4 Greater Scaup, 45 Am. Widgeon, 10 Gadwall, 300
Ring-necked, 45 Redhead, 2 Canvasback, 6 C. Goldeneye, 3 Pintail, 70
Bufflehead, 15 Hooded Merganser,2 Red-breasted Merganser, 35 Ruddies, 2
Long-tailed, 4 Canvasback, 16 Black Duck, 6 Green-winged Teal, and 30 Mallards.
Several hundred Canada Geese were also present.  The sight was truly
spectacular and was hands down the most waterfowl I've seen on the lake at one
time in nearly 20 years of birding at Lake Anna.
4 Tree Swallow also return to the nest boxes at the power station today.

Great Birding,

Mike Boatwright--
