I saw five Louisiana Waterthrushes this morning, 3/31/06, while hiking along
the South Branch of Quantico Creek in Prince William Forest Park. Also, as
Paula Sullivan noted in her post earlier this week, Pine Warblers are now
common in the Park -- every stand of pines seems to have one or more singing
Pine Warblers (although seeing them is not quite as easy as hearing them). I
came across an aggregation of 5 or 6 Hermit Thrushes. I assume these birds are
migrating, or staging to migrate, as I almost alway encounter them as isolated
individuals earlier in the season. I cannot recall, however, ever seeing any
information concerning whether this species generally migrates in flocks.
Tiger Swallowtails were out in force along the creek and the spring wildflower
display has already begun.
Finally, I saw my first snake of the year, a handsome Eastern Ribbonsnake
soaking up the spring sunshine.
