[va-bird] K's Pond Glossy Ibis and Sora Photos

On the hopes early morning sun would provide good light at K's Pond in
Rockingham County, I arrived around 7:45 a.m. to find another couple (Sorry,
but I've forgotten their names.) searching for the SORA. The GLOSSY IBIS
was all accounted for, feeding and grooming out in the open with the morning
sun lighting up the gloss in its feathers. (Comparing to my visit Thursday
late afternoon with sunny skies, today's early morning light was much better
for photographing the Glossy.) The whinny of the SORA was heard
sporadically but it would be about an hour later when not one but TWO SORA
emerged, both appearing to be adults. For a brief moment, the two were
side-by-side, making for a wonderful portrait had the camera lens been
pointing in the right direction. By now there were quite a few folks,
including a NoVA contingency represented by Sue Heath, Jon Little, BJ
Westervelt and Bev Leeuwenuburg.

Shortly after everyone left, a single HORNED LARK and GREAT BLUE HERON flew
in.

Other birds included WOOD DUCK (female) with single duckling, GREEN HERON
(4+), SOLITARY SANDPIPER (several), PECTORAL SANDPIPER (1), KILLDEER,
YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, etc.

Below are web links to a few pics of the Ibis, the two Sora and one of the
Solitary Sandpiper. A quick trip to Leonard's Pond yielded 1 SPOTTED,
several SOLITARY, and a single SEMIPALMATED PLOVER.
