Howdy all,
Due to the lack of power here on the shore yesterday, I was not able to post
yesterdays totals. So you all get a two day lump of birds out of me. Today we
saw less birds to band but the quality was fabulous! The best and rarest bird
of the day was a hatching year male CERULEAN WARBLER! It was the first since
1997 and only the second since 1994! (thats as far back as the data I have
goes) And to make it even sweeter than it already is, it was also a life bird
for
me!!! My last eastern warbler to get! One nemisis bird down!
Not to be out done, was the capture of a CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW. This was only
the third one banded since 1994--the other two were from last fall!
And the cherry on top has to go to the LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH we banded today,
the second of the season, and making it the first season since at least 1994
that more than one was banded during a fall season! There was only a total of
4 banded between 1994-2004.
Migrants are starting to move with the bulk here being AMERICAN REDSTARTS.
And on a positive note, quite a few of them are quite fat, which is always nice
to see!
Here is the totals for the last two days:
8/16:
Least Flycatcher 1
White-eyed Vireo 2
House Wren 1
Carolina Wren 2
Downy Woodpecker 1
Northern Cardinal 4
Northern Mockingbird 1
Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1
American Redstart 8
Black-and-white Warbler 2
Northern Waterthrush 2
Grasshopper Sparrow 1
TOTAL -------------------- 26
8/17:

A. Redstart 9
N. Waterthrush 1
L. Waterthrush 1
Chuck-will's-widow 1
Cardinal 2
Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 released un-banded
TOTAL --------------------- 15
The station is still in the set up stage with a few nets still needing to be
put up. The wind today was a problem causing us to close some of the exposed
nets--which also happen to be our best nets.
Hope to see everyone at the banding station!!!
Cheers,
Jethro Runco
