Howdy all,
Since the start of the month, the bird banding at Kiptopeke has still been
rather slow. With Gustav giving us a lot of wind the past few days, banding has
taken a hit. We are not able to have our nets open in the wind for the safety
of the birds, so we were only able to have a few nets open that were protected
from the wind. With only a few nets open, birds captures were very low. We did
have bigger days on the 3 Sept. and 5 Sept. with 82 and 86 birds caught and
banded, respectively. The last four days have only brought us 37 birds total.
So we are all praying that the winds let up!
The season total from 15 August to 11 September now sets at 659 birds banded.
Anyone is welcome to come visit the banding station! We band seven days a week.
We start 15-30 minutes before sunrise (around 6:30am) and we are there usually
6-8 hours after that. Of course, it all depends on the weather!
Cheers,
Jethro Runco
