[va-bird] Kiptopeke banding 9/25:Blackburnian, Blackpoll, Cape May, Blk-thr. Green

Howdy all,
Today was about what I figured when I stepped out of the house this morning.
The front had not passed all the way through and was still very cloud here.
Therefore, I wasn't expecting many birds today and that's how it turned out. We
banded 31 today. I do hope tomorrow is quite the different story.
But as bad as I make 31 sound, it ended with a bang. We caught our first 3
BLACKPOLL WARBLERS of the season this morning. But that was trumped late in the
morning went we caught our first (and maybe only) BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER of the
season. We do not get many, if any Blackburnians here. They are in lower
numbers here along the coast and they tend to stay higher in the trees. This
one
was only the third one I have personally banded, so you could imagine my
excitement. I just love Blackburnians! The rest of the day was a nice of
expected
species.
After banding, I sat on the hawkplatform for about 3 hours. I took a quick
break to go to my car and spotted a bird in one of the trees next to the car.
As
it turned out, it was a CAPE MAY WARBLER. I watched the bird for a good ten
minutes, and then found two BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS in the same general
area. And about 10 minutes after that, a second CAPE MAY joined the first one.
It was a nice to see both species together!

Anyway, here are the totals for the day 9/25:

Northern Parula 2
American Redstart 5
Common Yellowthroat 4
Black-and-white Warbler 1
Blackpoll Warbler 3
Black-throated Blue Warbler 3
Blackburnian Warbler 1 Yippee!!!
Traill's Flycatcher 1
House Wren 1
Red-eyed Vireo 4
Gray Catbird 5
Brown Thrasher 1
TOTAL --------------------------------- 31

I do hope tomorrow is better!
Cheers,
Jethro Runco
