Howdy all,
Today was our best day of the season as far as numbers go. We banded a total of
101 birds today, making it the first triple digit day for the season as well.
And right on time. Hopefully it is one of many this season!
The wind started to pick up later in the morning causing problems with the
nets, so capture rates went down as the winds picked up. Still, the morning was
a busy one. We only caught one new species for the season (Hooded Warbler) but
the other species were very nice to see. Hope it holds up for a few days until
the next cold front gets here.
The biggest highlight today was the capture of not one but three Canada
Warblers! It's a species we catch less than ten every year. Also the hatch year
male Hooded Warbler was a good looking bird!
Today's total 9/2:
WARBLERS:
Redstart 29
Magnolia 2
Prairie 2
Black-and-white 8
C. Yellowthroat 15
Canada 3
Yellow 1
Hooded 1
Black-throated Blue 1
N. Waterthrush 4
Ovenbird 2 (only?)
Worm-eating 1
OTHERS:
Acadian Flycatcher 1
Traill's Flycatcher 3 (it looks like we caught both Willow and Alders
today but I need to do some calculations to be sure)
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher 2
Red-eyed Vireo 12
Veery 10
Carolina Wren 1
Cardinal 2
Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1
Also another Golden-winged Warbler was seen on the shore today. Lots of
different warblers are being seen in the area! It really only the first part of
September??
As a side note, the flooded farm field on Capeville road (just south of
Stingrays) and to the EAST was full of peeps today. The best numbers of peeps I
have seen here in a good while. They were all quite close to the road and had
great looks. It held pretty much all the expected shorebirds. No Buffies or
Uplands were seen however. Maybe too much water.
Hope you all can get out and enjoy the early start to the fall!
Cheers,
Jethro Runco
