Howdy all,
Today was a much better day as far as banding and the temperatures go. We all
wish the winds would have been less, but we still managed to caught quite a few
birds today. If the winds were not around, we would have had a great day!
Anyway, we banded a total of 135 today, although there was a ton of birds
around the wind kept some of our "good" nets closed. It was sure nice to have
to put on a sweater this morning! It finally felt like fall! If the wind died
down a little tomorrow, it could be another good day.
The highlight birds today were the capture of three Cape May Warblers. We only
caught 5 for the season last year. We also caught another Rose-breasted
Grosbeak. The number of Redstarts today was another great showing. We banded 48
today. The top three days for AMRE this season are 48, 48, and 49. But the
biggest surprise of the day was the number of Northern Waterthrushes. We banded
a total of 17 NOWAs.
Totals for 9/19:
A. Redstart 48
Northern Parula 1
Magnolia 7
C. Yellowthroat 17
Black-and-white 2
Black-thr. Blue 14
Cape May 3
N. Waterthrush 17
Ovenbird 8
Traill's Flycatcher 2
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher 1
Carolina Chickadee 1
Indigo Bunting 2
Red-eyed Vireo 5
Swainson's Thrush 2
Gray Catbird 3
Rose-breasted Grosbeak 1
N. Flicker intergrade 1 (this bird had a few soft pink middle
primaries and in the rects.
looked like a yellow-shafted
back-cross)
Total 135
If the weather holds, we should have a decent day tomorrow as well. Let's hope
so!
See you at the banding station!
Cheers,
Jethro
