Howdy all,
Somehow we keep managing to catch birds even on the not so good days for
banding. We have not been having a lot of migrants around the station the last
few
days and the warmer temps by 10 am drop bird activity to almost zero, I am
amazed we have had the numbers we have been catching. Although not a lot, we
banded 19 today. The most unusual capture was a BALTIMORE ORIOLE our first of
the
season. We don't catch many of them. Everything else was expected. Today,
AMERICAN REDSTARTS and NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRDS, made up almost half our numbers.
Some friends stopped by the station today and they had found a dead baby
EASTERN HOGNOSE SNAKE on the road to the station. Looks like I might have been
the
culprit (since I drive in). Makes me sad, they are awesome snakes. We did
find another baby hognose later in the morning, this one alive. That's better.
Totals for the day 8/26:
American Redstart 4
Black-&-white Warbler 1
Prairie Warbler 1
Northern Waterthrush 1
Traill's Flycatcher 2
White-eyed Vireo 1
Downy Woodpecker 1
Baltimore Oriole 1
Northern Cardinal 1
Northern Mockingbird 5
Brown Thrasher 1
(what? no cuckoo) 0
TOTAL ------------------------------- 19
Cheers to all,
Jethro Runco
