Howdy all,
Today was a little bit better in the way of overall numbers and a few species
we don't catch many of. Although nothing stellar, we did catch a GREAT
CRESTED FLYCATCHER, EASTERN KINGBIRD, and YELLOW WARBLER.
I was greeted to a few early morning treats this morning when two GREAT
HORNED OWLS sat in a dead tree close to the station and chit chatted to each
other.
Then after I had all the nets open (still fairly dark) a CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW
sat on a dead overhanging limb and put on a great show by flying out and
catching what appeared to be June Bugs(?). Then fly back to it's perch and
grunt/growl a few times. Must have been choking it down! Yuck.
The was a bit of north wind in the forecast as of last night so I am hoping a
new wave of migrants is on the way. So far it has been decent but I am sure
ready for a bit higher numbers.
Here are the totals for 8/24:
American Redstart 7
Yellow Warbler 2
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher 1
Traill's Flycatcher 3
Great Crested Flycatcher 1
Eastern Kingbird 1
Field Sparrow 5
Northern Cardinal 1
Northern Mockingbird 5
Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1
TOTAL --------------------------- 27
We also found the worlds smallest EASTERN FENCE LIZARD today. Nose to tail
was less than two inches. A super cute baby; big head and all.
Cheers,
Jethro Runco
