Howdy all,
All I can say is if you are not going to catch a lot of birds, go for quality.
The past two days have leaned more towards the quality than quantity. With
single digits both days, numbers are still very very low. BUT migrants are
starting to reach out to other species, and not limited to Redstarts. Now if we
can just work on the numbers!!
Here is the list of birds banded the past two days.
American Redstart 3
Prairie Warbler 1
Ovenbird 1
Chestnut-sided Warbler 1
Worm-eating Warbler 1
Yellow-breasted Chat 2
Traill's Flycatcher 2
Carolina Wren 1
Northern Cardinal 1
Northern Mockingbird 2
Total (both days) 15 whole birds. wow. Maybe tomorrow.
To try to put things into perspective, in 2001 at the end of the day on the 28
Aug, the Kiptopeke Banding station had banded 326 birds for the season. That
year the season started on the 21th of Aug! That's after only 8 days of
banding! Last year the station started banding on the 15th of Aug. By the end
of the day on the 28th, 248 birds had been banded in the 14 days of the season.
This year however, after the first 14 days (starting on the 15th), we have
banded only 118 birds. I guess we have some "catching" up to do!! Ha ha
Anyway, the birds ARE coming!
