[va-bird] Kiptopeke Hawkwatch, 10/27

Hola Birders,
The raptor flight at Kiptopeke is less than stellar, at the moment. Good
Icterid flights continue and this morning brought 6,000 Robins in before 10am.
As far as Raptors go Sharpies are still hang'n in there and show up every hour.
Falcon numbers have noticeably dropped off but Buteo's are continuing to fly
in increasingly good numbers. In the Past five days five Golden Eagles have
been seen on four days. Broadwings are regular now too. In the past six days
we've counted 38 Broadwings on five days (one day was a rain out). Also during
these days we get plenty of quality time to socialize. I'd like to share with
you two of my favorite quotes heard while on the platform.

1) "Yeup, some of dem Eagles don't know they're Eagles 'till there're four or
five years old."
-a regular, in reference to the multiple subadult plumages of the Bald Eagle

2) "Oh honny, but that Redtail, you know his talk" -a one day visitor, in
reference to Blue Jay's mimicking Broadwings (I'm not sure of the exact link)

Alright enough fun, here's the breakdown for today:

BLVU: 52
TUVU: 87
OSPR: 4
NOHA: 14
SSHA: 55
COHA: 11
BWHA: 7
RTHA: 21
GOEA: 1 (Subadult?)
AMKE: 6
MERL: 4
Total: 264

Please check out www.hawkcount.org for more detailed count info for Kiptopeke
and your other local sites.

Other Birds:
Common Loons are still being seen regularly along with the ever increasingly
common Surf Scoter. Snow Geese were seen multiple times yesterday. Multiple to
many Purple Finch have been heard the past two mornings. An adult
White-Crowned Sparrow was found at our feeders this morning by the
distinguished Bill Williams while on his way to work.

Good day and good birding,
-Sam Stuart
