[va-bird] Kiptopeke & CBBT birding /Nov. 30

Brisk day in southern Northampton County. Bob Anderson and Thuy Tran found a
female King Eider on CBBT Island #1 (South Thimble Island), as well as three
Eurasian Collared-Doves at the intersection of Rtes 600 and 645, east of
Kiptopeke. This is the first since late October the doves have been seen in
the county, and this is their "regular" spot. Bob Abrams found a Little Gull
with Bonaparte's Gulls at Kiptopeke as well. On the Chesapeake Bay
Bridge-Tunnel, there were about 15 adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls, as well
as 2 first-winters, 5-6 second-winters, and one third-winter birds, all on
roosts on Islands 3 & 2, these tallied by Todd Day and myself. In addition,
there was one bird that appeared to be a hybrid of Lesser Black-backed and
Herring Gull (a surmise), an adult. There were probably more Lessers around
than this, but a minivan from Minnesota decided it would be entertaining to
frighten off all the roosting gulls, so we weren't able to go through them
very carefully. Nevertheless, almost two dozen Lesser Black-backeds is a
good number here, in keeping with last year's counts at this time.
