HI!
I explored part of the Middle Peninsula from
about 9:30 AM to about 6PM. In King and Queen Co
I focused my efforts in the Walkerton area. In
King William I spent most of my time at a private
farm and wildlife refuge along the Pamunkey River
and on Green Level Rd next to a beaver pond.
The highlights were the large number of snipes,
including one partially albino/leucistic snipe,
large number of kestrels, the immature bald
eagles eating a dead beaver, my first swallows
and purple martins of the year, a singing
yellow-throated warbler, and a vesper sparrow.

One immature BAEA swooped down on 4 turkey
vultures eating a dead beaver that was stranded
on a mudbar at low tide. During the next 1 1/2
hours a succession of 6 immatures took turns
eating the beaver and chasing away other immature
eagles)
Osprey (KW=6, K+Q=4: 1 pair was building nest)
Red-shouldered Hawk (KW=1, K+Q=3)
Red-tailed hawk (KW=2, K+Q=3)
A. kestrel (KW=14(12 in 1 spot along electric
wires in a farm field), K+Q=9 (5 in one spot
along electric wires in a farm field)
Wild Turkey (K+Q=6)
Killdeer (KW=6, K+Q=6)
Yellowlegs (both greater and lesser =58 in KW, 2
Lesser in K+Q)
Common Snipe (KW=65, though there were
undoubtedly more because of their amazing ability
to hide. One of these was much paler than the
rest. Its body was pale creamy white with no
distinct streaks anywhere. Its wings, breast and
back were mottled with pale tan. Its legs and
beak were yellow and its eyes were dark.

Woodpeckers: Downy=2, Hairy=2, red-bellied=2,
pileated=4, flicker=12)
