Sorry for the late posting.
I made my first winter visit to the King and
Queen County landfill between Little Plymouth and
Dragonville in the middle peninsula on Saturday
11/29/03, and saw my first two lesser black
backed gulls for the county. They were both
adults in beautiful light. This is a huge
landfill which receives trash from NJ and other
places. Signs post warnings about inhaling
asbestos dust however. There were also at least 6
bald eagles eating trash or gliding above the
gulls, often flushing them into flight. Other
gulls present were herring, ring-billed, great
black-backed and over 500 laughing. I scanned
carefully for franklin's and white-winged gulls
for nearly an hour but found none.
Also had my first brown-headed nuthatch for the
county (and the middle peninsula) in the pines
alongside the dump.
You might want to check this place out if you are
in the area. Take route 14 (The Trail) from
either route 33 (near West Point) or 360 (between
Tappahannock and Central Garage). Turn north
onto Devil 3 Jump Road (614). Turn right onto
Iris Road (possibly 609) which leads to the dump.
Just before the dump entrance turn right onto a
dirt road that follows the fenceline along the
dump boundary. Great views in morning light as
gulls sit on the mound. The asbestos warnings
scare me. The road continues on through nice
pine woods beyond the dump.
