[va-bird] King & Queen County USGS Breeding Bird Survey

Happy Summer!
On 6/21 (sorry for the late post)I did the annual
USGS Breeding Bird Survey (Truhart) in Lower King
and Queen County between Ino and Mascot through
Dragonville. The route roughly parallels "The
Dragon". It crosses a few swamps but is mostly
farmland and forest in various stages of regrowth
after logging. It is a very quiet area; I saw
only 18 moving vehicles during the whole morning,
ten of which were dumptrucks going to the County
Landfill. This area is a really nice mosaic of
habitat and as you can see below it is good for
bobwhite, hooded warbler, prairie warbler,
yellow-breasted chat, prothonotary warbler, blue
grosbeak, indigo bunting, and summer tanager.
The most abundant and widely-distributed bird on
the route is the red-eyed vireo. This kind of
survey is not a thorough survey, but it is
valuable for its consistency and for its
repetiton, visiting the same spots year after
year, allowing trends to be seen over the long
term, regionally and nationally. The surveyor
spends only three minutes at each stop. Each
stop is .5 miles apart and there are 50 stops,
all along roads. In addition to the species
listed I found yellow-throated warbler (at the
Friends of the Dragon canoe put-in near Mascot),
as well as purple martin, whip-poor-will, house
finch, rock dove, laughing gull, hairy
woodpecker, house wren, orchard oriole, green
heron, great blue heron, kingfisher, and a couple
more Kentucky Warblers along the route between
stops.

If you would like to see the list, copy and paste
this link in the URL bar above.

I think that will get you there. (It worked when
I tried it.)
All the best
Fred
