A female King Eider was reported this past week (19, 20, 21 June 2002) from
Chincoteague NWR at Shoveler Pond (which is the freshwater impoundment on the
north (righthand) side of the Wildlife Drive (Loop) road at its northern
edge. Observers included Sue Rice, Jerry Via, and Bill Akers. I had checked
the pond carefully the day before, looking for the White-faced Ibis (last
seen here at Shoveler Pond 5 June by Jack Hugus), and the eider was not
apparent on the 18th. It would be good to get photographic documentation of
this bird, which is rather rare in Virginia in the summer.
