This weekend I was joined by a good friend from New Jersey, Donna
Juettner, to do some birding. We hit several spots starting last
evening at Point of Rocks Park in Chesterfield County. The highlight
was the lone Caspian Tern seen cruising over the Appomattox River. Also
enjoyed were several Yellow-throated Warblers and a half dozen Hermit
Thrush. A highlight for Donna was a great look at a Pileated Woodpecker,
a bird rarely seen where she lives. This morning's trip to Kerr
Reservoir in Mecklenburg County was cut way too short by car trouble but
not before a first winter Red-necked Grebe was observed just above the
dam. Other highlights were 7 species of warbler that included
Black-throated Blue Warbler, Northern Parula, Palm Warbler, Pine
Warbler, Yellow-throated Warbler, Common Yellowthroat and Yellow-rumped
Warbler. Also enjoyed were a singing Hermit Thrush, Red-headed
Woodpecker and Brown-headed Nuthatch. Finally, after borrowing my Dad's
car, we headed to Staunton River Battlefield State Park in
Charlotte/Halifax Counties where we picked up multiple Palm Warblers and
Savannah Sparrows as well as a Prairie Warbler and a Barn Owl. Good
birding.
