I ventured down to Kerr Reservoir and Dam in Mecklenburg County this
morning. The bird of the day was Red-throated Loon. I found it on the
lake a couple of miles down Route 4 south after crossing the dam.
Having recently moved here from coastal New Jersey, I am unsure about
the occurrence rate of Red-throated Loons on large inshore lakes in
Virginia. According to my literature, it seemed like a good find.
Other birds found today included Double-crested Cormorant, Great Blue
Heron, Osprey, 2 Bald Eagles (1 adult and 1 first year), Spotted
Sandpiper, Ring-billed Gull, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Chimney Swift, Belted
Kingfisher, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Pileated
Woodpecker, Tree Swallow, Blue Jay, Carolina Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse,
White-breasted Nuthatch, Wood Thrush, Northern Parula, Black-throated
Blue Warbler, Pine Warbler, American Redstart, Summer Tanager and
Scarlet Tanager. Good birding.
