Today, I birded with Tina Trice at Kerr Reservoir in Mecklenburg County.
The PACIFIC LOON continues but not at Palmer Point, where it has spent
the
winter. The bird was located today on the main part of the lake above
the
dam and gave good views from the lookout behind the visitor's center.
The
visitor's center is located just before you get to North Bend Park.
There
were many COMMON LOONS around with some in full breeding plumage. Many
HORNED GREBES were also in breeding plumage. Not much else was new down
there since last week except for 4 pairs of BLUE-WINGED TEAL at the
wetlands behind the dog kennels at Dick Cross WMA. Land birding was
pretty
active at Dick Cross despite the raw weather but there was nothing new,
that I saw, in
the way of arriving spring migrants. NORTHERN SHOVELERS were at Clyde's
Pond. A stop in South Boston on the way to Keysville failed to produce
the Ross's Goose that was there last week. Good birding.
