Today, I met Mike Iwanik and Arun Bose down at Kerr Reservoir in
Mecklenburg County.  We arrived at the Palmer Point Day Use Area at 7 AM
and were immediately treated to excellent views of the PACIFIC LOON.  It
was the first loon we looked at and it was pretty close to us.  It
remained close throughout our time there as we enjoyed studying all the
field marks and behavior and I was finally able to get some photos for
documentation.  Overall, loon numbers were way down with only a small
number of COMMON LOONS present and a complete absence of the
Red-throated Loons that have been down there this winter.  Other birds
seen at Palmer Point included HORNED GREBES, BONAPARTE'S GULLS (some
with developing black hoods) and a NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW.
BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCHES were calling from the pines on the way out.

At the main lake above the dam, there was a flock of RED-BREASTED
MERGANSERS accompanied by 3 female RING-NECKED DUCKS.  A distant flock
of SCAUP were noted, most likely Lesser Scaup but they were too far away
to determine if any of them were Greater Scaup.  Near the dam was a
group of AMERICAN COOTS that had a single female CANVASBACK tagging
along.  A couple of HERRING GULLS were loafing near a buoy and another
ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW was seen with 2 TREE SWALLOWS.  Earlier, on my way
to Palmer Point, an OSPREY was seen flying over the dam.  An immature
BALD EAGLE was at Tailrace Park below the dam as well as a few female
BUFFLEHEAD.

Over at Dick Cross WMA, land birding was pretty slow but there were a
few ducks around.  The wetlands behind the dog kennel area had a group
of RING-NECKED DUCKS as well as a group of GREEN-WINGED TEAL.  Clyde's
Pond was pretty active with a large flock of RING-NECKED DUCKS.  Also
there were more GREEN-WINGED TEAL, NORTHERN SHOVELERS, MALLARDS and
HOODED MERGANSERS. Good birding.
