I went back to Kerr Reservoir in Mecklenburg County today to look for
the Pacific Loon. However, the only loons I found were all Common
Loons. Hopefully, the bird is still hanging around there somewhere.
Maybe it will turn up on the Kerr Lake CBC. One of the other birds I
found was a swan in the marsh off of Route 1 by Lake Gaston. The swan
was in the back of the marsh and even with the scope turned up to 60X, I
couldn't quite make out the bill structure of the bird. I'm guessing it
was a juvenile Tundra Swan based on the overall shape and color. Other
birds found today included Horned Grebe, Pied-billed Grebe,
Double-crested Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, American Black Duck,
Mallard, American Coot, Hooded Merganser, Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk,
American Kestrel, Bonaparte's Gull, Herring Gull (1 first year), Belted
Kingfisher, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Downy
Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, White-breasted Nuthatch, Yellow-rumped
Warbler, Field Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco and American
Goldfinch. Good birding.
