Today I went down to Kerr Reservoir in Mecklenburg County where I was
joined By Grace McCrowell from Chase City. Highlight bird was an adult
RED-THROATED LOON found at Palmer Point Recreation Area. This is the
third year in a row that a Red-throated Loon has been seen at that
location. Also at Palmer Point were at least a dozen COMMON LOONS.
There was also a sprinkling of Common Loons on the main lake above the
dam. HORNED GREBES are back but the numbers are still low. BONAPARTE'S
GULLS are also back in good numbers. Duck species included a lone
female BUFFLEHEAD and 2 pairs of RUDDY DUCKS above the dam and a small
group of WOOD DUCKS flying away at Dick Cross WMA. Below the dam at
Tailrace Park, there were 2 adult BALD EAGLES. Common birds dominated
at Dick Cross with fairly large flocks of AMERICAN ROBINS, CEDAR
WAXWINGS, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS.
GOLDEN-CROWNED and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, WINTER WREN, HERMIT THRUSH,
HAIRY WOODPECKER, SWAMP and SAVANNAH SPARROWS were also present among
the more common species. Good birding.
