Lori and other readers,
There are very few summer Bufflehead observations in No. VA of which I am
aware. Although the Dyke Marsh database for June goes back to 1986, there are
no
records listed for Bufflehead save for two of the three No. VA records for
this species that I can find. A late May bird was recorded at Dyke Marsh on
5/28/02. An individual was noted 6/1/03 at OBNWR in Woodbridge. Also, there
was
a Dyke Marsh bird on 7/13/97.
If readers know of other summer Bufflehead records, I would greatly
appreciate learning that infomation.
Based upon the data to-date, I would characterize a June Bufflehead sighting
as a very rare occurance, using the convention established by D. Sibley (see
"Birds of Cape May", CMBO (1993)) as this species is not yearly regular in the
Northern Virginia region and, when it does occur, is typically found in very
small numbers. Let me also note that, with respect to Huntley Meadows, even
during migration Bufflehead occurance is uncommon and warrants mention.
I observed the Huntley Meadows Bufflehead today, 6/30/03, at about 0830.
