My contribution to IMD was to advertise a walk in my local patch for the
neighbours. Somewhat to my surprise 8 people turned up. Many of the birds
were 'lifers' for them, though few if any keep a list. We walked along a
local stream (Long Branch from Wakefield Chapel Road to Queen Elizabeth
Boulevard) and across the grounds of Canterbury Woods Elementary School; all
in Annandale, Fairfax County. Managed to see or hear 49 species, of which the
highlights were:
Bald Eagle (fifth sighting in this area this year of an immature bird, very
strange)
Yellow-billed Cuckoo (1st of the year here)
Eastern Kingbird
Acadian Flycatcher
Swainson's Thrush
Gray-cheeked Thrush
Cedar Waxwing
White-throated Sparrow (quite a few still around)
Northern Parula
Magnolia Warbler (1st of the year here)
American Redstart (1st of the year here)
Wilson's Warbler (only 2nd year ever seen here)
Black-throated Blue Warbler
Black-and-White Warbler
Yellow-rumped Warbler (not as many as previously, but still a lot!)
Northern Waterthrush
Scarlet Tanager (male and female)
Rose-breasted Grosbeak (one female, 1st of the year here)
