Hi All,
In case anybody has any ideas, I just thought I'd mention that there is a
Mallard X ??? hybrid on a pond on Sallie Mae Drive in Reston, near the former
Sallie Mae building. It is basically a male mallard, except it has white on
the otherwise green head starting at the base of the nape extending up toward
the crown. A line extends upward on either side of the head, but the midline
of the back of the head is green. It's similar to a pintail's marking but much
heavier. There is also a somewhat wide half-crescent-shaped white patch on the
side of the animal above the waterline. It's puzzling because I can't find a
duck that has white in a combination of those areas, except perhaps a
Long-tailed Duck. It also has orange legs.
It's probably a Mallard X Barnyard something or other. I just wondered if this
sounds like anything interestng to any of you with hybrid experience.
Nothing very interesting at Riverbend this morning.
