At the Prince William Co. Landfill this morning, a first winter *darker*
Iceland Gull was sitting down below garbage mountain with the Ring-billed and
Herring Gulls. Bev Leeuwenburg and I spotted it as soon as we pulled up. Sue
Heath
and George Wheaton saw it in the same area about 20 minutes later. Up on the
mountain, we all got to see a pale first winter Glaucous Gull. We saw a
handful of Lesser Black-backed Gulls (mostly adults), including a larger
individual
that we were trying to turn into something else.
I would like to thank George for transporting an injured Turkey Vulture that
Bev saw at the landfill and I was able to catch, to Great Falls Animal
Hospital. A rehabber is supposed to pick the bird up from there, so hopefully
the
he'll make it. It apparently had a damaged left wing and was unable to fly. It
could sure run though! I was so worn out after chasing that thing. As I threw a
net over it, he turned over on his back so I was easily able to pick it up.
Nice bird... he only threw up a little on me!
