Several of us birded several areas in western Loudoun Co yesterday. A couple
of us started out owling and then vested the Dulles Greenway Wetlands (with
special permission to survey it) at 5:30 am and then headed on to the Blue
Ridge Center for the 8 am walk there where 10 of walked several of the trails
until early afternoon. We then visited several areas in western Loudoun south
of Bluemont until around 9 pm.
Our highlights included 2 nesting BALD EAGLES on the Wetlands, VIRGINIA RAILS
and SORAS on the Wetlands, 4 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 35 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, and
9 other shorebird species including LESSER YELLOWLEGS and LEAST SANDPIPERS
along side different farm ponds near Bluemont; very vocal BARRED OWLS AND
EASTERN SCREECH OWLS (a pair, one rufous-phased & one gray-phased), RED-HEADED
WOODPECKERS near Bluemont, a WILLOW FLYCATCHER at the Wetlands, a VEERY at the
BRCES; 18 warbler species including 7 BLUE-WINGED WARBLERS at BRCES (also had
another near Bluemont), CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, 3 very visible CERULEANS at
BRCES, WORM-EATING WARBLER, KENTUCKY WARBLER, including an astounding 12 at
BRCES, a HOODED WARBLER, several YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS, mostly at BRCES,
GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, lingering 3 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS near Bluemont, a BLUE
GROSBEAK near Bluemont, and BOBOLINKS.
Our team had a total of 103 bird species.
