Bart Hutchinson and I walked the Hike/Bike trail from 6 to 9 this morning.
Larry, you can add the following: we flushed an owl (probably great-horned)
in a pine on the left just before the split before the maintenance area;
HERMIT THRUSH; 4 RC KINGLETS; 1 flyover LOON; 110 flyover CORMORANT; 1 GREAT
EGRET heading to the new beaver dam; 1 PALM (yellow); and not a single
yellow-rump.
Looking at the posts today, I saw a total of 3 yellow-rumps reported in
Northern Virginia. I have birded every morning this week (at least a
little), and had exactly 1 yellow-rump. Can anyone remember a week in April
with such a dearth of yellow-rumps? I cant. Of course, there were very
few around this winter (as was the case with other frugivoreswhen was the
last time you saw a waxwing?). But I thought wed see the normal amount in
the spring. Of course, it could just be this weeks weather. It will be
interesting to see what the next couple of days brings (with the warm
weather).
