Greg Beck and I birded Huntley Meadows from 6:10am - 12:20pm on
Saturday 4/29/06. A total of 68 species were seen or heard. In
addition to Birds other wildlife was out in full-force. Lots of
turtles down Barnyard Run, Leopard Frogs, Toads, a Beaver, and a
Woodchuck that surprised us as much as we did it.
Highlights were:
Double-crested Cormorant - 25 flyovers
AMERICAN BITTERN - off of the boardwalk loop
possible LITTLE BLUE HERON - adult flew low overhead at about 6:20am -
uniform darkish blue with a dark beak. smaller with shallower
wingbeats than a Great Blue. I am not super familiar with this species
so my certainty is less than 100%.
GLOSSY IBIS - one that was in and out of the reeds on the far-side of
the marsh all day
Ring-necked Duck - male hanging with a female Mallard
Hooded Merganser - 4 - female with 3 chicks
Wilson's Snipe - at least 8
Barred Owl - at least one called on and off all morning
Eastern Wood-Pewee - FOY for me
Yellow-throated Vireo - 1
** Warbler diversity was light **
Northern Parula - 2
Yellow-rumped - many
Common Yellowthroat - many
Ovenbird - 6
Field Sparrow - only 1
Rusty Blackbird - 50-60
