Hello VA-Birders,
I stopped at Huntley Meadows, Fairfax Co, this afternoon to see what
shorebirds might be around. I had heard of another beaver dam break and
resulting low water, and was dismayed to find the area well drained. All that
remains is a shallow pool near the observation tower, where a few shorebird
species were found, including:
Killdeer 2
Lesser Yellowlegs 1
Solitary Sandpiper 3
Spotted Sandpiper 1
Semipalmated Sandpiper 8
Western Sandpiper 1
Least Sandpiper 2
Away from Virginia, yesterday I and about 40 others went on the pelagic
birding trip held by See Life Paulagics from Lewes, DE, where highlights
included:
Long-tailed Jaeger - juv at close range
South Polar Skua - in boat wake
Red-necked Phalarope - tough little guys to get on
Audubon's Shearwater - several
Cory's Shearwater - many
Greater Shearwater - good numbers
Wilson's Storm-Petrel - several dozen
Black Tern - many
Best to all,
Jay Keller,
Arlington, VA
