VA Birders,
Sorry this is a late report, but I thought I'd post it for the
record--and the birds might still be there. Last Wednesday, March 9, Pat
Blyer, Betty
Kilgore, and I went to Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co., for a walk and to see
what birds might be there. We found some snow still on the boardwalk, but
fortunately it was starting to melt and not very treacherous. In fact, by time
we came back, it had mostly melted. However, the frozen conditions in the
marsh were good for observing sparrows, and snipe kept flying around, looking
for
unfrozen ground, I think. We counted at least 15 Wilson's Snipe flying
around and occasionally landing on the flats out in the middle of the marsh.
We
also counted at least 10 Swamp Sparrows and 30 or more Song Sparrows, along
with
a few White-throats, mostly out in the open on top on the flattened
vegetation. We also saw a Fox Sparrow on the ground by the feeders at the
Visitor's
Center.
Good birding,
