VA Birders,
Since our weather forecast is for more rain in a couple of days, Pat
Blyer and I decided to go to Huntley Meadows Park in Fairfax Co. this morning,
to
look for the Blue-winged Teal which had eluded us this spring. We found at
least 5 or 6 in the new (?) pond along the informal trail beyond the tower, and
we had nice scope views of them. We met David Holmes back there too, and
walked back on the boardwalk with him. Near its beginning (as you are coming
from
the Visitor Center), David spotted a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and we soon found
a pair of these delightful little birds, also our first of the year. Thanks
David.
When Pat and I returned to the Visitor Center, we checked the feeders,
and we discovered a pair of Purple Finches there. Fortunately, Edna Aaron, who
had been looking for a male Purple Finch, came along just as I was leaving,
and the male returned to the feeders and gave her very good views from the
picnic table.
