The Monday Morning Huntley Meadows bird walk took place as usual with some new attendees taking advantage of the Monday holiday. The weather was warm, sunny and calm. It foretold the coming summer when birding at Huntley is often something less than excellent. We charted 43 species with the highlight being an adult Little Blue Heron, and a female Wood Duck with 6 ducklings in tow. Great Blue Heron - 2 Great Egret - 4 Little Blue Heron - 1 Green Heron - 2 Canada Goose - 13 Wood Duck - 7 American Black Duck - 1 Mallard - 9 Hooded Merganser - 1 Osprey - 1 Killdeer - 4 Solitary Sandpiper - 7 Yellow-billed Cuckoo - 3 Mourning Dove - 2 Barred Owl - 1 (heard, not seen) Chimney Swift - 5 Ruby-throated Hummingbird - 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker - 2 Eastern Wood-Peewee - 4 Acadian Flycatcher - 2 Eastern Phoebe - 5 Eastern Kingbird - 1 Tree Swallow - 13 Northern Rough-winged Swallow - 1 Barn Swallow - 1 Crow Species - 2 Carolina Chickadee - 3 Tufted Titmouse - 2 Carolina Wren - 3 Blue-grey Gnatcatcher - 2 American Robin - 6 Grey Catbird - 1 Cedar Waxwing - 4 European Starling - 1 Red-eyed Vireo - 2 Yellow Warbler - 1 Common Yellowthroat - 3 Scarlet Tanager - 1 Northern Cardinal - 6 Indigo Bunting - 1 Red-winged Blackbird - 30+ Brown-headed Cowbird - 1 American Goldfinch - 10 The Huntley Meadows Monday Morning birdwalk takes place every week, rain or shine, at 7 AM. It is free of charge, requires no reservation, and is open to all. Birders meet in the parking lot at the Park's entrance at 3701 Lockheed Blvd, Alexandria, VA.
