Only 4 hardy birders made up this morning's Huntley Meadows Monday Morning Bird Walk. The weather obviously kept many away, as it was bitterly cold. But despite the cold, we tallied 29 species. The highlights included the Wilson's Snipe that was reported in yesterday's VA Bird list in approximately the same place as Sunday's report, and a pair of Red-shouldered Hawks performing courtship behavior. Because the central wetland pond was nearly completely frozen the great throngs of ducks that we have been seeing all winter were gone, leaving some Canada Geese, Ring-billed Gulls, and one lonely pair of Northern Pintail Ducks.
