Greg Beck and I birded the Hike/Bike trail portion of Huntley Meadows this
morning from 700 until 1045. Things were overall very slow with very low
total bird numbers and species diversity. The winds were strong all day out
of the south (with occasional SSW winds). It was also very overcast with
only a brief few minutes of sunshine.
Total number of species was 28 :-(
The most abundant bird was far and away American Robins, they were
everywhere in large and small flocks. There was also a good number of
Northern Flickers. We ran into two other birders in the Woodcock meadow
around 9am our combined highlight at that time was an Indigo Bunting (not
exactly a highlight of Fall migration)! After this Greg and I ran into 2
mixed feeding flocks that contained a few goodies: Scarlet Tanager, Magnolia
Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, American Redstart, Ruby-crowned Kinglet,
and most exciting a pair of CANADA WARBLERs. Still not very much. Here is to
the next front bringing more birds!
