This afternoon I explored the Hike Bike Trail (at the Telegraph Road
entrance) at Huntley Meadows. The best birds I saw were three Yellow Breasted
Chats and a Blue Grosbeak at what is known as the Woodcock Meadow. It's the
meadow with the big brush piles which currently has a sign about the cicadas.
I also saw an entire family of Common Yellowthroats on what appeared to
be a family outing. I first came upon a baby who had recently fledged and was
sitting on a small bush not 10 feet from me. Then I saw another baby, and
soon both Mom and Dad showed up. I thought I heard one of the young warblers
saying something like "Are we there yet?", but perhaps it was just my
imagination.
Other birds of note were a Yellow Billed Cuckoo, an Ovenbird, and several
Acadian Flycatchers. If you venture out where I was, beware of deer flies and
dive bombing Tree Swallows.
