[va-bird] Huntley Meadows 2/25/02

VA-Birders,

A beautiful morning greeted the Huntley Meadows Park Monday morning bird
walk participants. It was a very productive day, with some interesting
sightings. Amongst the normal cast of characters were the following (in no
particular order):

RUSTY BLACKBIRD - several
green-winged teal - 40+
gadwall - 2
am black duck - 2
hooded mergs - 10+
GREAT EGRET - 4 (uncommon for the wetlands this early in the year)
cooper's hawk - 1
killdeer - 2
common snipe - 1
hairy woodpecker - 1
field sparrow - 1
towhee - 1

And...lending credence to my opinion that Huntley Meadows is northern
Virginia's favorite place to let your exotic pets "roam free" was a
green-bodied/yellow headed budgerigar (I think most people generically refer
to these little birds as "parakeets"). This little guy was flying about the
visitor's center getting some odd looks from the chickadees and titmice.

Good birding,
Chris French
