I visited Hunting Creek from about 12:30pm to 1:30 pm today, where I met
Laura Catterton. Together, we found 13 species of shorebird. There was
nothing new from the weekend.
killdeer
semipalmated plover - 3
spotted sandpiper - 1
greater yellowlegs
lesser yellowlegs
short-billed dowitcher
willet - 1 very pale bird (non breeding adult plumage, I think)
red knot - 1
western sandpiper - 1 juvenile in very crisp plumage
semipalmated sandpiper - quite a few juveniles, and a few adults in
winter plumage
least sandpiper - a number of brightly colored juveniles
stilt sandpiper - 5, what appear to be moulting adults
Wilson's phalarope - 3 I think they are all juveniles. One was
performing the spinning behavior even when it was standing on the mud.
Very interesting.
