A lone Horned Grebe was at the Upper Occoquan Sewage Treatment Plant, just
off Rte 28, south of Centerville, VA this afternoon, Jan 27. It was across
the water near the dam. This is the first Horned Grebe I have seen thus far
in Northern VA in 2003.
There was also a Lesser Blacked Gull at Lake Brittle, which is reached by
taking Rte 29 south of Gainesville, a left onto Rte 215 and an immediate
right onto Rte 600. You will see a sign on the left, Public Launching (Lake
Brittle). Turn left onto Lake Brittle Rd (Dr?) to the parking lot. This is
probably the same bird that has appeared here in prior winters.
