Waterfowl is definitely on the move. I've been seeing things other than
Canadas and Mallards here at Woodglen Lake in Fairfax.
I had a male Wood Duck on Feb. 21 and a flyover adult Bald Eagle.
I enjoyed watching a group of 17 Hooded Mergansers feeding late afternoon of
Feb. 22. A Ring-billed Gull was lurking around them and would try to steal
dinner whenever a merg came up with a fish. This went on continuously for the
5 minutes or so that I watched. I found it noteworthy because the mergansers
did not move to another part of the lake or otherwise try to avoid the gull.
They just ducked when it came after them as they surfaced.
Woodglen Lake Park is located in Fairfax County, near the intersection of Rte.
123 and Zion Drive.
