My Hoodie boys (2) are back at the pond by Chili's/Logan's Roadhouse (on Rt.
234 near I-66) and 6 are at the Pageland Farm pond on Pageland Lane. An Osprey
was perched near the pond yesterday.
A big surprise for me near the pond (the Red-necked Grebe pond) behind the
Circuit City on Rt. 234 near I-66, was a Lincoln's Sparrow that popped up as
soon as I pished. Just before noon (and just before the skies opened with a
deluge) I decided to check out the pond for waterfowl (none) and then saw
movement
in the saplings and brushy areas. Lots of sparrows including Song,
White-throated, Field, and White-crowned plus lots of others went unidentified
due to the
impending storm. The beavers have really done a number on recently planted
saplings near the parking lot!
A Vesper Sparrow was seen by Molly and Peter Ross yesterday at Sparrow Alley
(Manassas Battlefield). I had left shortly before that..darn. I went back in
the afternoon and missed it again. I've had no luck with finding Vespers this
fall, but very good luck with the Lincoln's. The Lincoln's must have had good
success with breeding this year or is something else in play here?
Six Purple Finches were feasting on juniper berries near the intersection of
Rt. 29 and Featherbend Lane, yesterday.
