VA Birders,
I checked the Roaches Run-Gravelly Point area in Arlington Co. early this
afternoon. In the big pond at Roaches Run, I counted at least 46 Hooded
Mergansers, and a pair of American Wigeon. I also saw 10 Pied-billed Grebes
and 11 Double-crested Cormorants there, the latter a bit of a surprise as I
thought most of the cormorants had already gone farther south. At Gravelly
Point, across from National Airport (which is located in Arlington Co., in
spite of a report to the contrary on a recent "Voice of the Naturalist"), I
found a large flock of blackbirds, which included 200 or more Brown-headed
Cowbirds and a few Starlings. I searched the flock for any unusual
blackbirds, but I didn't find any.
