Hello, birders.
I birded a big chunk of land at Sky Meadows SP in
Fauquier Co. today, from the entrance road pond to the
contact station through the Walnut Grove to the
fishing and farm ponds near Rte. 17. Best bird was an
odd looking female Hooded Merganser on the entrance
road pond this morning. It appeared to have little or
no crest and lacked the warm brown tones on the head
that a female Hooded normally shows.
Also, a young Kestrel was sticking it's head out of
its nestbox, which is located in the above mentioned
pond. It looked similar to the adults and I believe
it will fledge soon. I saw a male, a female and I
think one other Kestrel besides the one in the nestbox
but it's hard to tell because they were flying around
quite a bit. I guess they would be a sibling and the
parents.
