During a brief visit to the Shenandoah Valley for the Thanksgiving holiday, I
had a couple of interesting bird sightings. On Thursday (11/25) at Lake
Shenandoah in Rockingham County, Steven Boyle and I watched an adult
BONAPARTE'S GULL flying over the lake for about 10 minutes before it
disappeared to the south. Also at Lake Shenandoah, we observed one COMMON
LOON, about 10 RUDDY DUCKS, AMERICAN COOTS, a GREAT BLUE HERON, and a late
GREEN HERON.
At "Leonard's Pond" on Route 678, a NORTHERN PINTAIL was with a group of
MALLARDS.
Yesterday (11/26), on our way back to DC, we drove along Skyline Drive between
Swift Run Gap and Thornton Gap, making a few stops to look at birds along the
way. Bird activity was rather slow, but an immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at
the Pinnacles Picnic Grounds was a nice surprise and totally unexpected.
Happy Holidays!
