Hello all
Today Pat & I got out of town after a rough week at work . So we made a day
trip to Highland County first & then onto Bath County at the Dam & Lake Moomaw
which a good section of Moomaw was open water. Once in Highland County the
winter scenery was just breath taking . With the lightly snow covered fields
& the snow covered mountains standing up against a bright blue sky .The day
started out cold but it warmed up a good deal in the afternoon .Today's high
lights were 5 Bald Eagles , 3 Golden Eagles , dark phase Rough -- legged Hawk
, about 75 Horned Larks with 1 Lapland Longspur off of Rt . 637 in a feeder
lot. No winter finch's were found . Below is a list of 54 species of birds that
were seen today. H C for Highland County & L M for Lake Moomaw
Pied -- billed Grebe -- 2 -- LM
Horned Grebe -- 5 -- LM
Great Blue Heron -- at a fish hatchery on Rt . 220

Canvasback -- 5 -- LM
Ring -- necked Duck
Greater Scaup
Lesser Scaup
Bufflehead -- 95+ -- LM
Hooded Merganser
Common Merganser -- 5 -- LM
Ruddy Duck
Bald Eagle -- 5 -- 3 at LM & 2 at the Dam
Red Shouldered Hawk -- 1 off of Rt. 640
Red -- tailed Hawk
Rough -- legged Hawk -- 1 dark morph --- HC on Rt . 640
Golden Eagle -- 2 in HC at the usual place at the State line & 1 at LM
Am Kestrel
Wild Turkey -- 10 -- in a field on Rt 600 going towards LM
Am . Coot -- 450 + -- LM
Ring -- billed Gull -- 20 + -- LM
Rock Dove
Morning Dove
Eastern Screech Owl -- 1 when we were going thru Swoope looking for Short --
eared Owls -- NONE to be found
Barred Owl -- 1 after leaving the Dam
Red -- bellied Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker

Raven -- 8 in HC
Horned Lark -- 75 + in HC on Rt. 637
