[va-bird] Re: Highland County, 23 February 2002

To Todd Day's report of their excellent day of birding in Highland County, I
can only add a Northern Harrier seen along Rte 640, a fair number of Horned
Larks, and good morning birding activity at the hairpin turn on Rte 250 just
west of the Confederate Breastworks.

No Crossbills, but persistent pishing about 8:45 AM at the hairpin turn
produced a beautifully plumaged Pine Warbler, Red- and White-breasted
Nuthatches, Golden-crowned Kinglets, Black-capped Chickadees and Downy
Woodpeckers. A curious sighting there was a large red apple perfectly
situated atop a broken-off pine, maybe 100 ft. from the road and about 40 ft.
off the ground. After pondering how this feat could possibly been managed by
a human, Jon Little offered that it was probably the work of a crow or raven.
