Va Birders, Jay Keller and I drove out and back to Highland County today. It was a lot of driving, but it turned out to be worth it. Highlights included 10 different kinds of warblers and a nice variety of birds that we normally only see in the winter. We started at the Conderate Breastworks on the Highland County line where we saw Black-capped Chickadees. Later at the O'Bryan's Farm we got good looks at a Golden-winged Warbler. After that, we watched several Vesper Sparrows including two fledglings on 642 past Blue Grass. A vocal and active Least Flycatcher was hanging out at the corner of 642 and 220 where an LA Waterthrush was also heard. The next good place was Locust Springs where we had Blackburnian, Pine, BT Green, BT Blue, and Yellow-rumped Warblers. We also heard or saw a Golden-crowned KInglet, a Red-breasted Nuthatch, Hermit Thrushes and a Blue-headed Vireo. Later we got great looks at a Canada Warbler near Paddy's Knob. It was a long but productive day. Larry Meade
