Eight members of the Rockingham Bird Club found 67 species today in route to and from Paddy Knob in Highland County. Some of the best sightings were excellent looks at Bobolinks at Meadowdale and Hightown and two families of grouse chicks going up Paddy Knob. Leonard Teuber said this was the first time he had seen a Bobolink at Meadowdale. Diane Holsinger had to literally chase one of the mother grouses out of the road for us to get by. The most numerous bird was probably Chestnut-sided Warblers on Paddy Knob. We also had good looks at Black & White Warbler, Least Flycatcher and Sapsucker there. A Cedar Waxwing repeatedly put on a show for us hawking insects right over our heads at Meadowdale. On the way back we saw two L. Waterthrushes at Ramseys Draft (barely enough water to accommodate a waterthrush here) and a family of Kingfishers at the pond in Mt. Solon. Ken Hinkle Bridgewater, VA You are subscribed to VA-BIRD.
